Taurine is a sulfonic acid found in high concentrations in animal tissues and it has historically not been considered an essential nutrient for fish. However, in recent years, several studies have shown that taurine synthesis differs widely among fish and shrimp species, and it indicates that it plays a key role in aquaculture and nutrition of many relevant species, especially marine teleosts. Consequently, the removal of taurine-rich dietary ingredients such as fishmeal may cause a deficiency whose symptoms include reduced growth and survival, increased susceptibility to disease and damage to the larval development. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of taurine supplementation in alternative diets without fishmeal for Nile tilapia fingerlings. Twenty-five fingerlings (13 g) were placed in each of the 12 useful 80-liter polyethylene water boxes in a constant recirculating closed system with temperature control, aeration system and biological filtration. The treatments consisted of a control diet (1), commercial diet, free of taurine supplementation, and two other diets, with fishmeal without supplementation (2) and without fishmeal with taurine supplementation (3). The fish were fed four times a day, with daily feeding rate adjusted weekly according to biometries and room temperature. After 6 weeks of cultivation, there was no record of mortality between treatments. Data were not properly submitted to statistical analysis, but previous results show that diet two presented better performance and lower cost.
