RESUMO:

O hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) is characterized by a high concentration of glucocorticoids in the
blood. It is the most common endocrinopathy in the clinical routine. It can be classified into
dependent, independent and iatrogenic ACTH. The low-dose dexamethasone suppression test
is the test of choice for the diagnosis of HAC in dogs, whereas ACTH stimulation is
recommended for disease control. In practice the treatment is medicated. The most commonly
used drugs are mitotane and trilostane. Both drugs have side effects and trilostane is the most
tolerated by dogs. Melatonin is indicated for treatment for alopecia x, with no side effects on
patients. However it is used as a treatment of CAH in other species and without evidence in
dogs. The anti-stress effect is still misunderstood, but its action is believed to be on
glucocorticoid receptors which decreases serum cortisol concentration. It acts in various tissues
and its primary function is antioxidant action. The aim is to demonstrate that melatonin can be
used as a treatment for HAC ACTH dependent in dogs. Serum cortisol values will be collected
from a database and analyzed through a retrospective study in which dogs with melatonin-
treated ACH-dependent HAC will be analyzed by analysis of variance. Age, sex and race
together with the low dose dexamethasone suppression test and after the use of melatonin the
ACTH stimulation test will be part of statistical analyzes using SAS (SAS® Institute, USA). It is
expected to observe the serum decrease in cortisol levels in dogs evaluated between diagnostic
and control examination after oral melatonin use, confirming that it can be used in the treatment
for HAC ACTH dependent in dogs.
