RESUMO:

Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PPDS) is one of the main causes of neonatal problems in
suckling piglets. SDP is estimated to affect one in ten lactating swine females in pig farms
worldwide. The main symptoms are related to the presence of diarrhea, mortality and poor
performance of the litter in the first days of life. Tolfenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat MMA and PPDS due to its analgesic, antipyretic and
anti-inflammatory action.
The zootechnical performance of suckling pigs was evaluate after intramuscular administration
of Tolfedine CS ® (4% tolfenamic acid, solution for injection) in gilts after farrowing through a
metaphilatic treatment of PPS.
The experimental trial was conducted with 332 previously selected piglets and subsequently
randomized in two groups. The treated group (administration of Tolfedine CS ®), consisting of157 piglets that received a single intramuscular injection (1mL / 20 kg body weight) after
farrowing. The control group, composed of 162 sows, not treated. The uniformity of the litter
was performed 2x daily. Between 7 and 8 am (farrowing finished after 7 pm the previous day)
and in the late afternoon, between 5 and 7 pm (farrowing finished after 8 am). All litter were
uniformed with 14 piglets, respecting the same number of viable teats. All piglets from both
groups were weighed individually at three times; on the day of standardization on the fourth and
eighteenth day after standardization. Litter from both groups were evaluated for mean and total
weight gain, diarrhea occurrence, fallbehind rate and mortality rate at 4 and 18 days of life,
totaling 4,466 piglets, 2,198 and 2,268 for the treated and control groups, respectively.
The treated group obtained 0.41% (p = 0.0285) less mortality than the control group. This rate
increases to 4.5% when analyzing litter without diarrhea. In this category, cumulative mortality
on day 18 was 4.3% and 8.8% for the treated and control groups, respectively (p = 0.0005). The
average weight of piglets at 18 days in litter without diarrhea was 4,949g, compared to 4,593g
for litter with diarrhea.
Diarrhea affected the weight gain of piglets, especially in the treated group. The total weight
gain of the treated group was 3.9% (p = 0.1093) higher over the 18 day period. Specifically for
litter without diarrhea the total weight gain of litter in the treated group was 9.0% (p <0.05)
higher than the control group.
One possible explanation is that gilts experience the stress form farrowing and the pain from
sore teats for the first time. Tolfedine's 48-hour anti-inflammatory and analgesic action helps the
gilts feel less nipple pain and therefore more receptive to piglets.
Tolfedine CS ® had a positive effect on gilt well-being and on her performance, which in
increased weight gain and decreased mortality of their suckling piglets.
