Infectious disease caused by a type 3 corona virus, infectious chicken bronchitis (IBV) is
widespread among breeding herds in Brazil, causing large economic losses, low
productivity, low hatching, increased mortality and carcass condemnation at slaughter.
Infectious bronchitis virus has high recombination and mutation rates and may lead to
the formation of viruses identified as variants. Thus, the objective of the present study
was to identify the presence of IBV in breeding herds in the Southern region and to
carry out an epidemiological survey of recent years in search of the most prevalent
strain in this region studied. To this end, a total of 2,700 analyzes were carried out from
2016 to 2019 in broiler chicken farms in the three states of Southern Brazil. These
samples were tested for avian bronchitis by the real time polymerase chain reaction
(qPCR) technique. The, positive samples were submitted to viral bronchitis isolation and
after confirmation of isolation, these samples were evaluated by the genetic sequencing
technique for strain differentiation. From the samples analyzed against clinical
suspicion, 85% showed negative results in the diagnosis of qPCR, and 15% (392
samples) were positive. A total of 43 samples have been isolated so far, of these
67.44% were positive for Brazilian variant strains. The data presented here showed
positivity of bronchitis and a higher prevalence of Brazilian variant serotype strains.
