Agricultural activities and urban effluents are the sources of contamination of surface waters by Salmonella spp. When released into water bodies, they can survive for long periods of time and are transported over long distances, transforming aquatic ecosystems into reservoirs. The objective is to evaluate the contamination of the Capinzal River by Salmonella spp. The Rio Capinzal is located in the municipality of Capinzal, Santa Catarina (27 ° 20'37 "S, 51 ° 36'43" W). Water and sediment samples were collected at six points along the river: three points in the rural area and three points in the urban area of the municipality. The points were along the course of the river so as to cover from the source to the next to its mouth. The methodology used to analyze the presence of Salmonella spp. is following ISO 6579: 2002 / Amd.1: 2007 and ISO 6579-1: 2017 standard. 54 water samples and 54 sediment samples were collected, totaling 108 samples. The collections were carried out in the year 2016 and 2018 with seasonal periodicity in all seasons of the year. Of the 108 samples collected, 37 (34.6%) were positive for Salmonella spp. Of the 18 samples collected the previous week a water sample and another sediment sample were positive for Salmonella spp. which is beginning to contaminate the source of the river. The 54 points of water and sediment collected were 31 (54.4%). Salmonella spp., While in the rural area of 54, only 6 (11.11%) contamination. In the center of the urban area, of the 18 samples collected 12 (66.67%) positivated for Salmonella spp. The result is 32.43% of the 37 positive samples, that is, practically one third of the positive samples from the entire study. This code was contaminated by Salmonella spp. Initiation in the rural area and intensification in the urban area of the municipality. The results are preliminary, then the strains will be submitted as steps of serotyping, PFGE and antibiogram.
