RESUMO:

The experiment evaluated the agronomic traits, the production and the quality of silages of maize varieties with open pollination of the Company of Agricultural Research and Rural Extension of Santa Catarina. The study was conducted at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina, Campus located in the city of Concórdia (SC). The experimental design was a randomized complete block design in a 2x3 factorial scheme with four replicates, the first factor being the line spacing (EEL) - 0.7 m or 0.8 m - and the second one, the cultivar (SCS-154 Fortuna , SCS-155 Catarina or SCS-156 Colorado). Planting was carried out on October 20, 2017, with a final stand of 55,000 plants.ha-1. The data were submitted to normality tests, principal components analysis and grouping, followed by analysis of variance and Tukey's test. The milk production estimate considered the NRC methodology. The cluster analysis showed that the cultivars Fortuna and Catarina had similar responses when considering the bromatological variables and the agronomic characters. The ethereal extract was the only component of the bromatological analysis that differed (p=0.02) among the cultivars, being the smallest amount found in the cultivar Catarina. The time from emergence to male flowering and cut-off point for silage was 70 and 101 days, respectively, for Fortuna and Colorado; and 73 and 105 days for Catarina. The cultivar Colorado had lower plant height (p=0.001) and lower spike insertion height (p = 0.006). The dry matter production was 16,412.5 and 16,295.5 kg of MS.ha-1 for the cultivars Fortuna and Catarina, respectively, which differed (p=0.01) from Colorado, which produced 14,347.25 kg. Because reach the silage point 04 days before Catarina, the cultivar most suitable for silage is Fortuna, which also showed greater leaves participation in plant structure. Fortuna had the highest conversion potential in milk per area with 16,272.65 L.ha-1 (p=0.017). The conversion potential into milk per ton of dry matter was affected by the spacing, but not by the cultivar, being higher in the EEL 0.7 m (p=0.02).
