RESUMO:

The presence of Salmonella in pig production systems has been a worldwide concern. Therefor, adequate internal and external biosecurity measures are extremely important factors in the control programs. In this scope, the feed plays a significant role, the agent can be found in ingredients, equipment, final product, waste and dust from food producing facilities for pigs. The main chemical agents used to control the agent in the feed are organic acids and their salts, formaldehyde, bacterial wall disrupters (such as terpenes and essential oils). The main advantage of these chemical treatments is the residual effect, which can persist after storage, helping to protect the food against recontamination. Products based on organic acids and formaldehyde provide effective control against Salmonella for more than 21 days. The present study aims to compare the effect of the addition of three different products based on formaldehyde and organic acids in diets for nursery pigs on the enterobacteria counts and presence of Salmonella in the stored feed and its impact on the zootechnical performance of the animals. For this purpose, two hundred and eighty nursery piglets will be randomly divided into blocks, 4 treatments, 7 replicates per treatment and 10 animals per experimental unit. The zootechnical performance will be measured by the feed consumption and weighing of the animals. While the levels of contamination of the ration will be evaluated by means of the collection of feed at different stages of the production (expedition, transport, storage and in the trough), through laboratory tests for Salmonella research and enterobacteria counts. In this context, the use of antimicrobials based on organic acids and formaldehyde in the diet of pigs may contribute positively to reducing the incidence and spread of Salmonella in swine herds, without interfering with the zootechnical performance of the animals.
