RESUMO:

The objective of this study is to characterize the dairy properties of the southern region of Santa Catarina, regarding the socioeconomic and technological profile. Information will be collected from 360 rural establishments, which formally market milk to the Santa Catarina agroindustries, using a sampling of 6.5% of dairy farms in each municipality. The distribution of the samples will occur in 45 municipalities, at random, and the data will be extracted from the application of a questionnaire, through an electronic form, covering questions about the area used for the activity, infrastructure, labor, besides data on nutritional, health and reproductive management. To date, 128 interviews have been carried out, verifying that the average total area of the properties is 26 hectares and only 14 hectares are used for dairy cattle. The mean total herd comprises 65 head, of which 31 are lactating with predominance of the Jersey breed. The average milk production per day is around 591 kilos. Within the nutritional management, one aspect worth mentioning is that 49.2% of the producers do not provide pre-calving diet for their cows. In addition, 3.12% of the properties do not perform mineral supplementation. In the sanitary management, 100% of the properties carry out vaccines for the prevention of clostridia, as well as vermifugation and strategic control of ectoparasites. Monitoring of brucellosis and tuberculosis is performed in only 47% of herds. It is observed in the reproductive management that 16.40% of the properties use exclusively controlled natural mating as a reproductive technique and 27.34% use the association of natural mating controls and artificial insemination. It is worth mentioning that the data obtained are found in the municipalities belonging to the Braço do Norte Valley, being this region more technified and more developed in the activity in question. It is believed that at the end of the research the data undergo considerable changes.
