RESUMO:

Neospora caninum is an important intracellular parasite, first described in dogs with neurological alterations, which is currently considered one of the most important diseases causing abortion in dairy cattle (Gondim et al., 2004). Occurrence of repeated oestrus, successive abortions, and transient anoestrus are closely related to the occurrence of N. caninum infection (BRUHN et al., 2013). Milk cattle breeding is a traditional activity in the Vale do Itajaí, and the territory was the largest milk producer in the state, currently occupying the second place. The demand for veterinary care in the reproductive area has been increasing in recent years, and reports of problems with abortion and heat repetition have been reported more frequently by veterinarians in the region as well as by inseminators and by the producers themselves when seeking technical assistance agencies together with municipal governments, or consulting professionals related to cooperatives and companies that offer technical assistance services in the veterinary field. There are several studies of the disease in Brazil, but little is known of its occurrence and prevalence in cattle in Santa Catarina. In the Alto Vale do Itajaí, the need to carry out this study, which aims to collect epidemiological data, contribute to the reduction of losses due to neosporosis in the region, and to demonstrate to other professionals and producers the risks and losses caused by its existence, thus enabling the adoption of biosafety measures, which, together with the institution of prophylactic measures, are essential for the maintenance of animals free of this disease.
