SUMMARY:

The Brazilian swine industry is constantly evolving and a consequence is the emergence of diseases, especially viral infections. In the last 30 years, the emergence of new pathogens that affect the development of pigs has been observed, such as the case of porcine circovirus or PCV. PCV is a circular single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Circoviridae family, Circovirus genus. To date, there are four species of PCVs capable of infecting pigs, namely, PCV1, PCV2, and the more recently discovered PCV3 and PCV4. PCV2 has been described as one of the main viral pathogens that affect swine and cause significant losses to swine worldwide since its discovery. Due to its reported high genotypic variability, PCV2 currently has nine different genotypes from PCV2a to PCV2i. Based on previous studies, the most prevalent and important genotypes are PCV2a, PCV2b, and PCV2d. This work aims to identify among these three main genotypes, which are more present in Brazil, through a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 320 samples of animals with clinical symptoms will be genotyped, which were previously diagnosed as positive for PCV2. Samples will be tested individually for each genotype. In order to obtain positive controls, 18 samples were sequenced looking for the PCV ORF2. We will also look for the presence of co-infections between genotypes in the same clinical sample. To date, 105 samples have been tested, with PCV2d being the most prevalent.
