SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: Sandflies are important insects for public health due to the vector action of numerous pathogens, including Leishmania spp. Despite the importance of constant entomological surveillance in silent municipalities, studies have not paid attention to these regions. OBJECTIVE: To carry out an entomological survey of sandflies in the city of Concordia, Santa Catarina, as well as to investigate the natural infection by Leishmania infantum in the species found. METHODS: For the entomological survey, CDC light bait traps are being used, installed indoors and outdoors in six locations in the city. The traps remain on for 12 hours on three nights of each month for a period of 12 months. The sandflies collected are transferred to microtubes containing 70% alcohol and stored at -20ºC, for later identification of the species. After identification, DNA extraction from females will be performed using the phenol-chloroform technique to verify the presence of sandflies positive for L. infantum through the Polymerase Chain Reaction. RESULTS: In the first semester of the survey, between April and September, seven sandflies were identified, three females identified in the São Cristóvão neighborhood in May and September, two males and one female in the Quintino Line in September and a female in the district of Santo Antônio in the month of April. CONCLUSION: The city of Concordia has the presence of the vector that transmits leishmaniasis and the entry of allochthonous cases to the city may represent a risk if the animal is not accompanied by a veterinarian and does not comply with the protocols for the use of repellent collars.
