SUMMARY:

In a pig production system, gilts represent the major percentage of females in the herd. Roughly, 20% of culling are from gilts that leave the herd without having farrowed. Strategies to induce puberty, if effective, may aid genetic improvement and structuring action plan in order to optimize insemination groups in the farms. On the other hand, traits of quality and puberty precocity are associated to high longevity and productivity. The objective of this study is to understand the triggering events of puberty by proposing strategies of estrus induction in gilts with the use of long-acting injectable progesterone (P4i). In experiment 1, pre-pubertal gilts 150-days-old were used in order to characterize pharmacodynamics of P4i (Sincrogest® Injetável, Ourofino). Gilts were divided into four groups with different concentrations of P4i: Control (T0 mg, n=6); T150 mg (n=6); T300 mg (n=6); T600 mg (n=6). On day zero (D0), treatments were administered via intramuscular injection and blood was collected (D0; D2; D4; D8; D12; D16; D26) to dose serum progesterone. In experiment 2, two replicates of the study were performed using pre-pubertal gilts to assess the effect of puberty induction through the use of P4i (300 mg). In the first replicate, two groups were assembled: Control (T0mg, n=108) and T300 mg (n=106). On the D0 of the study, when the females received the treatments, they were on average 145 days old. Females were monitored daily for standing estrus reflex in the presence of a mature boar for 45 days. Females that did not exhibit standing reflex were slaughtered and their reproductive tracts were monitored in the abattoir. On the second replicate, gilts 150-days-old were allocated into two groups: Control (T0mg, n=112) and T300 mg (n=110). Estrus detection was performed as in the first replicate. After manifestation of second estrus, gilts of both replicates were inseminated and data on pregnancy and farrowing rates are going to be recorded. There was the effect of treatments concerning progesterone metabolization (P<0.01) and group T300 mg was defined as the dosage of use. In the first replicate of experiment 2, 76.8% out of 108 gilts exhibited estrus and, up to the present time, total piglets born is 13.28 and born alive 12.32. In the group P4i, 67.0% out of 106 gilts exhibited estrus reflex and total piglets born and born alive are, respectively, 13.89 and 12.81. In the second replicate, 59.0% of gilts in group P4i and 52.7% in the control group manifested estrus reflex, up to the present time. The preliminary results indicate that there was no beneficial effect of P4i regarding puberty induction.
