TITLE:

Productive and animal welfare effects in hen chickens: meta-analysis.

KEY WORDS:

Beak trimming, Laying hens, Corticosterone, Mortality, Infrared beak treatment.

PAGES: 45
BIG AREA: Ciências Agrárias
AREA: Medicina Veterinária
SUMMARY:

The consumer of animal protein, is increasingly demanding in relation to the way animals are raised, mainly with a focus on animal welfare, such as rearing in cages and cutting the beak in laying hens. The beak trimming consists of the removal of the lower and upper part of the nozzle and can be applied through different methods such as cutting and cauterization by hot blade or by infrared radiation. Therefore, the objective of the systematic review and meta-analysis proposed in this study will be to compare the types of beak existing in laying hens, hot blade and infrared radiation, assessing whether there is a difference in zootechnical performance (indicators of mortality and egg production) and if animal welfare is negatively affected (corticosterone and pecking) with the use of radiation. A systematic review and meta-analysis will be developed with the works already published on the ways of beak trimming and its effects on the zootechnical performance variables and the physiological indicators of animal welfare. The search strategy was developed to identify studies that evaluated the population (chicken, bird, laying, chick), intervention (beak, trimming) and response (mortality, pecking, production, corticosterone). The data sources considered were original scientific articles, with no year restrictions and in Portuguese or English. The search was carried out in September 2020 in three electronic databases: Scopus (Elsevier), MEDLINE / PubMed and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) and 1,775 articles were found. Duplicate citations were removed manually, leaving 982 papers. These studies will pass the selection criteria by reading the title, keywords and summary. For statistical analysis, a confidence interval of at least 95% will be calculated and prevalence from the weighted average of the statistics for each study. It is hoped to be able to demonstrate that the birds that have their beak treated with the use of infrared radiation, do not suffer stress at the time of beak and does not affect the welfare of the birds, which is important for the understanding of the consuming population and compliance with international certifications that evaluate the poultry chain.
