BIOSECURITY IN COMMERCIAL PIG FARM FOR SLAUGHTER IN SANTA CATARINA STATE: ASSESSMENT AND ECONOMIC STUDY.
Questionnaire, Adequacy Index, Financial Cost.
Brazil is the world's fourth largest pork producer and exporter. In this scenario, the State of Santa Catarina is the largest Brazilian producer and exporter, it is also the only FMD-free state without vaccination, which is why Santa Catarina products can be sold to the most demanding markets. Maintaining this health status is essential for the survival of the production chain. In order to avoid the introduction of pathogenic agents in pig production units, it is necessary to adopt biosecurity measures. This project aims to analyze the minimum biosecurity conditions of commercial hog farms for slaughter in the State of Santa Catarina and to determine, through an economic study, the costs necessary to adapt to the minimum biosecurity conditions. An online questionnaire was sent to the e-mail and / or messaging application (WhatsApp) registered in the database of the Integrated Agricultural Development Company of Santa Catarina (Cidasc) regarding the commercial hog farms for slaughter (Piglet Production Unit) with more than 200 sows and farrow-to-finish farms with 30 or more sows), some questionnaires were also answered with the support and / or encouragement of an integrator of the State. In order to develop an adequacy index, the minimum conditions for biosafety were assigned a value of 1 and 0 when the practice of biosecurity was present or absent, respectively. The practices described in the questionnaire were grouped into categories, and a group of 08 specialists in swine health was consulted to weigh the weights of the categories regarding the importance of preventing the introduction of external pathogens. Finally, the farms were classified into groups, according to the need to implement measures of greater financial cost, and then consultants, builders, service providers and suppliers were asked to establish the adequacy costs. The results of the questionnaire, as well as, the development of the adequacy index is in the stage of statistical analysis. Data from the economic study is being collected. The completion of the statistical analyzes is scheduled for the end of November 2020, and the economic study for the end of December 2020.
