TITLE:

POLOXALENE FOR CONTROL OF CATTLE TYMPANISM.

KEY WORDS:

Clover, Pasture, Supplementation, Legumes.

PAGES: 45
BIG AREA: Ciências Agrárias
AREA: Medicina Veterinária
SUMMARY:

Tympanism is one of the most common nutritional problems in ruminants. Bovines consuming diets with high starch content or pastures with more than 50% of legumes in their composition, have tympanism and, if left untreated, end up dying. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the most common legumes are white clover (Trifolium repens) and red clover (Trifolium pratense). Tympanism is caused by the protein rapidly degradable by ruminal bacteria and the presence of saponins that generate foam. The gases mix with the rumen content forming a very stable foam, preventing the formed gas from being eructed. The clinical signs start approximately 15 minutes after the introduction of the animals in the pasture with a high proportion of legumes. Several studies have tested which molecule is capable of modulating rumen fermentation, decreasing the population of methanogenic bacteria and, consequently, decreasing the rapid degradation of these pastures. Poloxalene is a polymer of high molecular weight and has been used since the 1960s in several places around the world to control tympanism in cattle, mainly in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) pastures. In this sense, the project will evaluate the use of Poloxalene to control the tympanism of cattle grazing. The experiment will be carried out in the municipality of Lagoa Vermelha, RS, from December to January 2021. Forty male and castrated bovines, of British breeds, with an average weight of 350 kg, will be divided into two paddocks intercropped with white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and tifton. The evaluated treatments will be characterized by the use of Poloxalene or not (control). Poloxalene will be added to an energetic mineral supplement in self-consumption troughs, adjusted for ingestion of 200 g for each 100 kg of body weight. With Poloxalene. The experimental design used will be a completely randomized design, with each animal being an experimental unit. Supplement consumption, presence or absence of tympanism, average daily gain and collection of feces for analysis of organic matter, dry matter, crude protein and energy will be evaluated. At the end of the project, Polaxelene is expected to be effective in controlling ruminal tympanism. caused by the ingestion of high amounts of pastures of legumes and allows an increase in animal weight gain when compared to the control treatment.
