SUMMARY:

The present study aimed to understand what are the senses and meanings (LURIA, 1992/ BAKHTIN, 2002) that teachers of Portuguese Language in the 6th grade of the Municipal Network of Camboriú attribute to reading. This investigation is located in the field of qualitative research, developing from the collection and transcription of interviews, which were instrumentalized in individual face-to-face meetings. It’s understood that subjects build their knowledge based on social relations (VIGOTSKY 2001/BAKHTIN 2002) historically located and ideologically marked, thus, when analyzing the teachers' perspective and outlining their perceptions, we start from the premise that reading is a political and emancipatory act. (FREIRE, 2005), but its role may be greatly underestimated or even erased in school practices and curricula, and this may indicate the answer to the disastrous indices related to educational progress in the country. Therefore, we get in the following basic question: How do Portuguese Language teachers understand reading, what are their references and distances from what is built in the classroom and the theory? For that, the data are approached through linguistic and discursive analysis (BAKHTIN, 2002). As a result, approximations and distances are demarcated, dialoguing with the concepts of senses and meanings and reading for teachers of the age group and chosen discipline, thus, presenting the perceptions of this community, so it’s possible to understand meanings and meanings that reading, teaching of reading incorporate/are incorporated in this process.
